The PIC Proto-System consists of a PIC microcontroller development board and a companion solderless breadboard attached to a common metal base.

The development board incorporates the basic PIC microcontroller support circuitry:

• Sockets for 28-pin or 40-pin Microchip PIC FLASH microcontrollers (16F and 18F families).
• 5-volt regulated power supply; wall mounted transformer or battery source.
• RS-232 serial connection to a host PC.
• In-Circuit Serial Programming/In-Circuit Debugger connections.
• Multiple microcontroller clocking options.
• 40-pin signal header for breadboard prototyping connections.

Power is delivered to the breadboard by two dedicated wires from the development board. Signal connections are made from the development board signal header to the various tie-points on the breadboard.

The Proto-System is delivered with one of the following PIC FLASH microcontrollers:

• PIC16F877 or PIC18F452 (40-pin devices)
• PIC16F876 or PIC18F252 (28-pin devices)

The microcontroller will be pre-programmed with bootloader firmware. This allows a developer to program the device via the RS-232 connection from a host PC, eliminating the need for an external programmer.
